Imagine Midnight Network not as a secretive, unseen web, but rather a digital masquerade ball.
You can confirm that everyone attending was invited and holds a valid ticket, but you don’t necessarily know their names or what they have unless they decide to share it.

Here’s how it works with ZK proofs: Midnight uses something called ZK-SNARKs, which sounds complex but basically lets your computer tell the blockchain, I have enough funds for this transaction, and I’m following the rules, without showing your exact balance or who you’re sending money to.

The process is pretty straightforward: First, when you make a transaction on Midnight, your device does the main work. It performs the necessary computations and generates a mathematical proof, known as a ZK proof. This proof serves as a kind of certificate, confirming the validity of the information without disclosing any of the underlying data.

Subsequently, you transmit this compact proof to the Midnight network.
The network verifies the math and, if everything is correct, updates the ledger. Throughout this, your private information stays on your phone or computer and is never shared.

Consider a world where you could show your age without an identification card displaying your place of living. Alternately, without revealing your entire bank account history, you can prove you have enough money for a down payment. This captures the Logical Privacy model of the Midnight Network. This finds a middle ground between the demand for legal compliance and the goal of total anonymity. Midnight guarantees that keeping privacy does not have to be expensive or computationally taxing by isolating the private transaction fuel (DUST) of the network from its governance token (NIGHT). This approach gives all users, even large corporations, access to data control.
