📅 December 4th: Feast of St. John Damascene 🙏

Happy Feast Day! Today the Catholic Church celebrates St. John Damascene (c. 675–749), Priest and Doctor of the Church. Known as the "Golden Speaker" for his eloquent writings, he was a monk in the Monastery of St. Sabbas near Jerusalem.

His greatest legacy? Bravely defending the veneration of holy icons during the fierce Iconoclast Controversy in the 8th century. While emperors banned images of Christ and the saints, St. John argued that icons are windows to heaven, honoring the Incarnation—God became visible in Jesus!

Key quote from his "Apologia Against Those Who Decry Holy Images":
"I do not worship matter; I worship the Creator of matter who became matter for my sake."

His three treatises helped pave the way for the triumph of orthodoxy at the Second Council of Nicaea (787). He's also famed for theology, poetry (he wrote many hymns), and even early defenses against Islam.
