🇮🇷 SEARCHING FOR A CANDIDATE 🇮🇷
Following the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, on February 28, 2026, Iran is undergoing an unprecedented power transition process, accompanied by military conflicts with Israel and the United States.
Current leadership situation
Interim Leadership Council: Under Article 111 of the Constitution, a three-member interim leadership group assumes power. This group consists of President Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Supreme Court, Gorlam Hossein Mohsene Ejai, and a religious figure from the Guardian Council (presumably Alireza Alafi).
Function of the Assembly of Experts: This body of 88 religious figures is nominally responsible for selecting the definitive successor. However, reports of an attack on its headquarters in Qom during a deliberation meeting have surrounded the selection process with uncertainty.
Main candidates
As of March 5, 2026, the most prominent candidates include:
1.- MOJTABA JAMENEI.
Son of the deceased leader. Reports suggest that under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the assembly of experts selected him in secret, but an official announcement is expected after his father's funeral.
2.- ALI LARIJANI.
Veteran politician and former secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. Some sources claim that Khamenei appointed him as his operational successor, responsible for managing the state of war, days before his death.
3.- ALIREZA ALAFI.
Member of the interim council and trusted figure in religious institutions.
4.- HASSAN JOMEINI.
Grandson of Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic, but hardliners consider his political influence limited.
