In 2009, Lily Allen was invited to perform a virtual concert inside the online world Second Life. The payment offered was in Bitcoin reportedly around 200,000 BTC but at the time the cryptocurrency was obscure and worth almost nothing. Allen declined the offer, dismissing the idea of being paid in digital currency.

By 2014, she tweeted about the missed opportunity, noting she had turned down “hundreds of thousands of bitcoins” for that Second Life gig. The coins she rejected in 2009 would later be valued in the tens of millions by 2014, and today would be worth tens of billions. The story has since become a famous example of how early skepticism lead to missed fortunes.
