Crisis at US Airports: Shutdown Melts Travel and Becomes Political War
By: Fabiano
Gigantic lines, passengers sleeping in terminals, and agents working without pay. This is the reality at US airports since February 14, when the funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) expired.
In Atlanta, waits reached nearly two hours. In Houston and New Orleans, travelers reported lines of three to four hours. Airports recommended arriving five hours in advance.
About 100,000 DHS employees are working without a paycheck. The impasse in Congress: Republicans want to pass a full budget with immigration agencies; Democrats demand reforms in ICE and accuse Republicans of blocking partial funding.
More than 300 TSA agents have resigned. Absences due to "illness" have more than doubled. A union representative summarizes: "Agents with zero balance, with no money for daycare or food."
Trump attacks Democrats on Truth Social: "They broke the agreement to fund sanctuary cities. Agents, keep working!" Democrats counter: Chuck Schumer reminds that they tried six times to approve partial funding, but Republicans blocked it.
Meanwhile, Minneapolis suffers from a winter storm, Denver asks for donations for agents, employees are absent for not paying for daycare. The House approved a bill, the Senate has not yet voted.
Recommendation: prepare to wait.
