Celo was founded in 2017 by Rene Reinsberg, Marek Olszewski, and Sep Kamvar, with the goal of creating a blockchain ecosystem focused on enhancing global financial access through mobile phones.
The project officially launched its mainnet in April 2020, along with the release of the native token CELO. Shortly after, the first stablecoin of the ecosystem, Celo Dollar (cUSD), was also deployed to facilitate transactions with stable value.
Since its launch, Celo has attracted many major partners in the blockchain and finance sectors such as Coinbase Ventures, a16z, and Polychain Capital. The platform continues to expand with numerous DeFi projects and decentralized applications (dApps) built on the Celo blockchain, solidifying its position in the global cryptocurrency market.
