In a remarkable development in the world of digital currencies, an old Bitcoin wallet, dating back to the era of “Satoshi Nakamoto”, has witnessed sudden activity after a period of inactivity of 15 years. According to data from Arkham Intelligence, this wallet, which was created on January 13, 2009, has begun transferring large amounts of Bitcoin to the Kraken exchange over the past two months, with a total value of up to $5.47 million.
Records show that the wallet was active between 2011 and 2014, making several transfers to other exchanges and addresses. The wallet then remained dormant for a decade, during which time its holdings rose from $474,000 to over $80 million. In recent weeks, the wallet has resumed activity, making three separate transactions that moved 10 bitcoins to Kraken. The wallet currently holds 1,215 bitcoins, worth around $77 million.
The moves come at a time of growing speculation about the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder of Bitcoin. In a recent HBO documentary, Peter Todd, a famous Bitcoin developer, was highlighted as a possible candidate to be Satoshi Nakamoto, sparking controversy in the cryptocurrency community. However, Todd has vehemently denied the claims.
Given how few people were aware of Bitcoin in its early months, some believe that these movements may be linked to Satoshi Nakamoto himself. However, there is no conclusive evidence to support this assumption. For example, in May 2020, a similar transaction sparked speculation about Satoshi’s involvement, but subsequent analysis has shown that this hypothesis is incorrect.
It is worth noting that similar moves from old wallets are not uncommon. In December 2024, another Bitcoin whale, who had been dormant for 11 years, moved his entire holding of 2,700 Bitcoins, which was valued at around $266 million.
These moves are generating widespread interest in the cryptocurrency community, especially as they come amidst significant increases in Bitcoin prices, prompting some to question the impact of these transfers on the market and whether they indicate potential selling trends by whales.
