Algorand is a third-generation blockchain created by MIT professor Silvio Micali. Its main feature is solving the "blockchain trilemma": how to make a network simultaneously
fast, secure, and decentralized.
Operating principle: Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS)
Unlike Bitcoin (which requires powerful hardware) or regular Proof of Stake (where the rich get richer and control the network), Algorand uses Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS).
Random selection: The system secretly and randomly selects a group of users to verify the next block of transactions.
Anonymity: No one knows who the next validator will be until the block is formed. This makes the network resilient to attacks on specific nodes.
Speed: A block is finalized in ~3.3 seconds. This means that the transaction is final instantly (no "forks" or waiting for confirmations).
Energy efficiency: The network consumes minimal energy (it is carbon-neutral), and the fee is only 0.001 ALGO.
Areas of application (Where does this really work?)
Due to its speed and low cost, Algorand is ideal for sectors that require high throughput:
1. Tokenization of Real-World Assets (RWA)
This is Algorand's main advantage. Real estate, gold, securities, or intellectual property rights are being transferred to the blockchain.
Example: Lofty.ai allows you to buy shares in rental real estate (token for $50) based on Algorand.
2. Financial services and CBDC
Central banks view Algorand as a basis for state digital currencies.
Example: The Marshall Islands chose Algorand to create their digital currency (SOV). The network is also used for instant cross-border transfers.
3. Ecology and carbon credits
Algorand is a "green" blockchain, so platforms for trading CO2 emission quotas are built on it.
Example: The PlanetWatch project, which uses air quality sensors and records data on the blockchain.
4. Global payments and stablecoins (Stablecoins)
The most popular stablecoins — USDT and USDC — operate on Algorand. Due to the speed of the network, they perform better here than on Ethereum, where fees can reach tens of dollars.
5. DeFi and NFT
Although Algorand is not a leader in the realm of hype NFT images, it is actively used for music NFTs (Napster was bought to develop on Algorand) and decentralized exchanges.
