U.S. President Donald Trump announced Iran's readiness to return to negotiations with Washington. According to him, the corresponding initiative came from the new Iranian leadership, and the American side agreed to dialogue.
In an interview with The Atlantic magazine, Trump stated that Tehran expressed a desire to discuss further steps, and he supported this idea. At the same time, the White House chief emphasized that, in his opinion, the Iranian side should have made contact earlier.
«They want to talk, and I agreed. They should have done this earlier — it was a practical and simple solution, but they took too long,» said the president, according to The Atlantic.
Trump also refused to clarify possible timelines for the start of negotiations. According to him, some representatives of the Iranian side, with whom contacts were previously made, are no longer participating in the process. He noted that Tehran had the opportunity to conclude an agreement earlier; however, the authorities of the country, in his opinion, "overestimated their positions."
