A very unusual royal sapphire today because it’s not a traditional blue sapphire - it’s Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring!
Full disclosure, until I saw Eugenie’s engagement ring I had no idea that sapphires could be any other colour than blue! Am I the only one? Am I an idiot? 😂😂
Anyway, to the important details. In January 2018 Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Princess Eugenie of York & Jack Brooksbank. The couple posed for photos & chatted about their engagement in the Picture Room of the palace, showing off Eugenie’s stunning & very unusual engagement ring.
The central stone is a large oval padparadascha sapphire, which has a very distinctive pinky orange colour - much different to the deep blue sapphires that we are used to seeing. Padparadascha sapphires are very rare & usually come from Sri Lanka. The sapphire in Eugenie’s ring is set in a gold band & surrounded by two pear shaped diamonds & a halo shape of smaller brilliant cut diamonds. The design is very floral-esque.
Jack had proposed to Eugenie during a holiday in Nicaragua. He had chosen the unusual sapphire before the proposal but waited until afterwards to give her the ring so that she could have input into the design. He said that he was drawn to the padparadascha sapphire because its changing colour in different lights reminded him of Eugenie’s many & differing wonderful qualities. 🥹
