The Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of the Treasury (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on six individuals and two entities for their role in schemes to attract North Korean IT specialists, who brought nearly $800 million to the DPRK government in 2024, the ministry reported.
Sanctions are aimed at individuals based in North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and Spain. The statement says that they facilitated the remote work of scammers in American companies and the subsequent money laundering through cryptocurrency.
The North Korean regime targets American companies through fraudulent schemes carried out by its overseas IT specialists, who use sensitive data as a weapon and extort large sums from companies. Under President Trump's leadership, the Treasury Department will continue to monitor financial flows to protect American businesses from these malicious activities and hold those responsible accountable." said U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen.
