Many people's first reaction is privacy chains, but if you look closely at the design, it actually resembles filling a gap in Web3 — data privacy. In the past few years, blockchain has emphasized transparency, with all transactions and data being publicly available on the chain. This is not a problem in DeFi, but if blockchain is really going to enter a larger commercial world, many pieces of information cannot be fully public, such as corporate data, user identity information, and even the transaction details in many financial scenarios.

The idea behind Midnight is not simply to hide data, but to do one thing through zero-knowledge proofs: to prove that things are true without exposing the data itself. This retains the credibility on the chain while protecting sensitive information. Structurally, it is more like providing a new foundational capability for future on-chain applications rather than just making anonymous transactions.

The core asset of the entire network is $NIGHT

The design of NIGHT is also quite special; it is not simply used to pay for Gas but will continuously generate a resource called DUST. The transactions and smart contract executions on the network consume DUST, rather than directly consuming NIGHT. In simple terms: holding NIGHT essentially means holding the production capacity of network resources.

One change brought about by this structure is that many applications, if they hold a certain amount of NIGHT, can continuously generate DUST and even help users bear transaction costs. For users, the experience will be more like Web2 — using applications without needing to buy Gas first.

From a holistic perspective, the Midnight Network does not just aim to create a privacy chain, but is trying to redesign a way to use blockchain: maintaining trust on the chain while allowing privacy to be a controllable and verifiable capability. If Web3 is indeed to move towards larger commercial scenarios in the future, this kind of infrastructure may become increasingly important, and NIGHT is likely to become a core asset in this system.
