Iran will require Bitcoin to cross the Strait of Hormuz, according to FT
Iran will require shipping companies to pay tolls in cryptocurrencies for tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz, in order to maintain control of this key maritime passage during the two-week ceasefire.
Hamid Hosseini, spokesman for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Exporters Union, stated to Financial Times that Iran intends to charge tolls to all tankers passing through the strait and to inspect each vessel.
"Iran needs to control what comes in and out of the strait to ensure that these two weeks are not used for arms trafficking," said Hosseini.
"Anything can happen, but the procedure will take time for each ship, and Iran is in no hurry," he added.
Hosseini stated that each tanker must inform the authorities by email about its cargo, after which Iran will communicate the toll that must be paid in cryptocurrencies.
He added that the fee is $1 per barrel of oil and that empty tankers can pass freely.
This is not pleasant news but it shows that cryptocurrencies remain VERY IMPORTANT in any global event.
