I know some players who cringe at the thought of durability.

This is totally understandable. Nobody likes to be told that the hard-earned goods they’ve created will 'break, age, and need replenishing' by the system. However, if we zoom out, a world where nothing breaks is often more dangerous because it seems accommodating but is slowly draining the underlying demand.

Stuff never really exits the market; once the supply runs out, it's gone.

Once the supply vanishes, the replacements will too.

As time goes on, production capacity remains, stock is still there, but the demand has faded.

This is why many economic systems get bulkier and duller over time. Players hold onto a bunch of stuff, the system sees abundant resources, yet the genuinely meaningful new demand keeps dwindling. The world seems to be expanding, but in reality, it’s becoming stagnant.

So when I see Pixels bringing durability into play, I won’t just see it as a punishment mechanism. I prefer to view it as a metabolic statement: the things in this world are not immortal, usage will cause wear and tear, wear and tear will necessitate restocking, and restocking will revive liquidity.

This step feels very old-school.

It's also quite necessary.

What really tests people is that sweet spot. If it breaks too fast, players get annoyed; if it breaks too slow, it’s ineffective at all. The team needs to find that balance that pushes the metabolic rate without diffusing the excitement. This kind of balance really tests your business acumen because there's no one-size-fits-all answer; it has to be calibrated slowly through system details.

But anyway, this is way more honest than continuing to play the generous card. One of the cheapest tricks in chain games is telling you, 'What you own will always be valuable, never break, and always be by your side.' Sounds cozy, but often ends up turning the entire ecosystem into a hoarding pit.

So, I actually put more weight on durability, even though it's a bit uncomfortable.

It forces the project to acknowledge that the world needs a refresh.

Once the world starts to refresh, $PIXEL the higher-end consumables won’t end up in a wasteland that no longer needs new stuff.
