Last time I mentioned that I couldn't find the real-time daily active users for Pixels, which is the number I'm most curious about. Today I stumbled upon some historical data, and it actually made me more uneasy.
In June 2024, Pixels' daily active users plummeted from 970,000 to 250,000 in just a week, a drop of 74%. It wasn't a gradual decline; it was a cliff dive. The timing was right around the launch of Chapter 2.
When I first saw this number, my immediate reaction was: "This is just a normal reshuffle caused by the Chapter 2 mechanism adjustment, the yield farmers got cleaned out, and what's left are the real players." I thought this explanation made sense, so I didn't dig deeper.
But then I sat down and crunched the numbers. From 970,000 down to 250,000, that’s 720,000 people gone. If most of those 720,000 were bots and opportunists, then the remaining 250,000 is a solid base. If it rebounds to over 1 million, it means new players are filling the gap. That logic holds up.
The issue is I can't verify how many of those 720,000 who left were actual players. If 30% of those who bailed were genuine fans of the game but found the new mechanics too daunting, then this "shuffle" actually wiped out a chunk of real users, just masked by the departure of the opportunists.
This situation made me start taking a potential seriously: If Chapter 4 also undergoes major changes, could we see a repeat of this script? In Pixels' AMA, Luke mentioned that Chapter 4 focuses on mobile and new player experience revamps, so theoretically, we won't see a hardcore economic overhaul like in Chapter 2. But with "theoretically," I’m starting to keep my distance from that phrase.
I've got my position, but I'm waiting for the daily active numbers after Chapter 4 drops; that figure speaks louder than any mechanic analysis.
