Launched in March 2022, ApeCoin (APE) is an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token that serves as the primary governance and utility asset for the ecosystem surrounding the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Yuga Labs. While famously associated with BAYC NFT holders, who received a significant initial airdrop, the token is independently governed by the ApeCoin DAO, a decentralized organization where all APE holders can vote on project funding and ecosystem rules.
