Many people hear 'a certain game migrating to a new chain' and instinctively think, 'Oh, just switching to a chain with cheaper fees.'
However, Pixels moving to Ronin isn’t as straightforward as it sounds.
On one side, there's a chain that once skyrocketed to the peak of GameFi with Axie, but later cooled off; on the other side, there's a pixel game that gradually gathers players through farming and community.
If you overlay these two lines, you'll realize this isn't just about a 'game moving chains'; it feels more like:
A chain is saving a game, and a game is saving a chain.
🕹️ First, let's check Ronin: a chain that 'must find a new narrative.'
Ronin was almost exclusively Axie's dedicated chain at the beginning:
• At the peak of Axie, the trading volume and active wallets on Ronin surged to the forefront of the entire market.
• After the GameFi craze faded, Axie's heat dropped, and the entire chain sank along with it.
For a chain, this is dangerous:
• If all memories are tied to 'the last bull market's single game',
• So what story do we tell next round? Who will support the new players and capital?
Later, Ronin started introducing more games, but the one that really pushed the entire chain back into the spotlight was Pixels:
• After the migration, the media directly described this pixel farm as 'shouldering the Ronin ecosystem'.
• Active wallets on the chain and game-related activities have visibly heated up again.
From Ronin's perspective, Pixels is clearly: a core asset that can be used to tell 'new stories'.
🌾 Looking back at Pixels: Why move if they don’t have to?
Conversely, Pixels didn't necessarily have to move.
• It has already accumulated a group of old players willing to log in daily to farm and complete tasks.
• Has its own land market, community culture, and gameplay rhythm.
Moving to Ronin means:
• Tying yourself to a 'chain with historical baggage',
• In the short term, there will be many technical, experiential risks and communication costs.
So why is Pixels still considering a move? Because from another angle, Ronin brings three key things:
1. Ready player base
The group of players left from Axie were already used to playing games on this chain.
2. Brand + Resource Backing
A chain willing to invest resources to push you up will share the narrative with you, instead of just treating you as 'one of the DApps'.
3. The position of 'chain savior'
On a chain that needs a new story, Pixels has the chance to become the name everyone thinks of first when this chain is mentioned.
In other words, Pixels isn’t just being 'pulled to go public', but has taken on a role: you not only need to take care of yourself, but also save this chain together.
⚖️ Who is saving whom? Actually, it’s 'betting tied together'
So back to that question: Between Pixels and Ronin, who is saving whom? If you look at only one side, it's easy to draw extreme conclusions:
• 'Ronin is relying on new games to wash the data again.'
• 'Pixels sacrificed neutrality for subsidies.'
But the reality is more like a two-way bet:
• Ronin is betting: Can Pixels sustain a long-term ecosystem that's 'not just about grinding', helping prove that 'this chain can support the next generation of GameFi/SocialFi'.
• Pixels is betting: Is Ronin willing to keep investing in 'game + player quality', instead of just chasing one-off on-chain data spikes.
This is what I want to talk about with the 'chain saving narrative': On the surface, it's about games moving, but in reality, it's: a chain and a game tying their futures to the same timeline.
🧭 For players, when choosing a chain, you can ask two more questions
So what's this got to do with you as a player?
Next time you choose a chain to play games on, maybe ask yourself two questions:
1. Who is this chain currently 'saving'?
Is it willing to invest resources for truly content-rich games, rather than just subsidizing exchanges and memes?
2. What is the method of salvation?
Are they just stacking short-term rewards, or are they willing to design chapters, credit scores, guilds, and ecosystems together with the game?
If the answer leans towards the latter, then spending time on this chain may give you a bit more 'long-term remembered value' than places that only chase subsidies.
🔚 What type of game would you pin your 'hope to save the chain' on?
😎☕Having written this far, I actually want to hear your thoughts more.
If it were you as the chain side today, what kind of game would you pin your 'hope to save the chain' on?
• It might attract a bunch of people in the short term, but could leave the entire scene scattered after three months with a blockbuster?
• Or a slower-growing small town where players will genuinely stay for three years and want to live inside?
Please leave a comment saying: 'I choose: blockbuster' or 'I choose: small town'
