I remember when $PIXEL hadn’t launched yet. Farming in Pixels felt different back then. Lighter. People were making crop patterns just for fun, even spelling words with carrots. No economic motive, just creativity.

That energy is mostly gone now.

This isn’t random. Psychology calls it the “overjustification effect.” When you introduce external rewards into something people already enjoy, intrinsic motivation fades. The behavior stays, but the reason changes.

Pixels positioned $PIXEL as a utility token, not a primary income source. But the market doesn’t care about docs. When price pushed past $1, the game got reframed as an earning tool. Farming stopped being play and became extraction.

The $BERRY → Coins shift was a step toward rebuilding a non-financial layer of gameplay. Smart move. But once players start linking their time to an exchange rate, it’s hard to undo that mindset.

Pixels Pals is the most interesting bet here. A separate, emotionally driven experience could bring back intrinsic engagement. But only if it’s not gated by $PIXEL from day one. Add a paywall early, and the same cycle repeats.
