UK Urged to Take Control of Its AI Future Amid Global Competition
The Liz Kendall has called on the United Kingdom to take a more proactive role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence, warning that failure to act could leave the country dependent on decisions made by global tech giants.
Speaking on the growing influence of major U.S. firms, Kendall highlighted that a significant share of global AI computing power is currently controlled by companies such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Oracle. This concentration, she noted, raises concerns about long-term technological independence and economic competitiveness.
Kendall emphasized that the UK must invest in its own AI ecosystem, including chip design, infrastructure, and innovation funding. While the country remains a hub for academic excellence and companies like DeepMind, challenges such as high energy costs and regulatory hurdles have slowed progress on key projects, including data centers and supercomputing initiatives.
Despite these challenges, the government is advancing plans to strengthen domestic AI capabilities, including launching a state-backed investment fund. Kendall also made it clear that pursuing AI sovereignty should complement, not replace, the UK’s strong partnership with the United States and leading firms like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Her message was direct: stepping back from AI development is not an option. Instead, the UK must actively shape how the technology evolves to ensure it reflects national interests, supports economic growth, and remains globally competitive.
