Former Australian rugby league star Trent Merrin has reportedly been arrested in connection with a cryptocurrency theft case worth around $91,000 USD (about 140,000 AUD).
Authorities claim that Merrin allegedly transferred the digital assets from another individual’s account using deceptive methods. His arrest comes amid Australia’s growing crackdown on digital asset-related crimes.
Merrin has been released on conditional bail and is expected to appear before Port Kembla Local Court on December 3.
A familiar name to NRL fans, Merrin enjoyed a 15-year professional career, playing for the St. George Illawarra Dragons, Penrith Panthers, and Leeds Rhinos. He also represented New South Wales and the Australian national team during his time on the field.
Since his retirement in 2021, Merrin has shifted his focus toward business and investment, particularly in the cryptocurrency, blockchain, and wellness industries. On LinkedIn, he describes himself as an entrepreneur passionate about innovation and healthy living.
