13 June – St. Anthony of Padua
Priest, Doctor of the Church, Franciscan & Wonder-Worker
Born Fernando Martins in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal, to a noble family, he joined the Augustinians before transferring to the Franciscans, taking the name Anthony. A brilliant preacher and theologian, he taught in Italy and France, earning the title “Hammer of Heretics” for his defense of the faith. Famous for his profound love of Scripture, the poor, and the Child Jesus (whom he once miraculously held in his arms), he is the patron saint of lost and stolen items. He died on 13 June 1231 at age 35 in Padua. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946.
“Attribute to God every good that you have received. If you do, you will not be puffed up by pride.”
The “Saint of Miracles” and beloved Franciscan preacher — showing that deep prayer, humble service, and bold proclamation of truth can make one a powerful instrument of God’s mercy.
Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. Anthony of Padua, grant us zeal for Your Word, love for the poor and the Eucharist, and the grace to find what is lost — especially souls.
