The UK government plans to ban social media access for kids under 16. At first glance, this seems like a protective move. However, from a digital privacy and information freedom standpoint, this policy could actually trigger much greater dangers.

VPN Boomerang Effect

Absolute restrictions and bans rarely work effectively in the digital age. Blocking social media will likely push the younger generation to find shortcuts using VPNs, which ultimately exposes them to unregulated networks and far worse illegal content.

History has shown this pattern:

* When Russia tried to block Telegram, 95% of teens there stayed active by switching to VPNs.

* A similar trend occurred massively in the face of internet censorship in Iran.

Regulatory Illusion vs Parental Responsibility

Many parents today are using smart devices as "digital babysitters" to calm their toddlers. No matter how strict government regulations are, they won't fix the fundamental issues of this parenting model.

Parents are actually equipped with various self-protection tools, including:

Built-in Parental Control* features.

Screen Time* app.

A firm decision not to hand out smartphones* at an early age.

The Threat of Mass KYC: Sacrificing Privacy for Security?

For communities that care about decentralization and data privacy, the technical implementation of this law is a red flag. To enforce age restrictions, all internet users in the UK will eventually have to "prove" their age.

This means society is forced to hand over high-level personal data to centralized platforms through:

* Official Identity Card (ID).

* Biometric scanning (facial recognition).

* Bank card detail verification.

The Motive for Surveillance Behind Protection?

Every year, thousands in the UK face arrest just for political posts on social media. With the binding mandate of identity verification (KYC) linking every social account to the real identities of residents, a critical question arises:

Is this regulation really designed to protect children, or is it just a new mechanism for mapping identities and facilitating the arrest of citizens?
