🇲🇾 The Malaysian Ringgit has strengthened
Who is secretly laughing? Who is silently bearing the burden?
Recently, many news reports are talking about one thing:
「The Malaysian Ringgit has reached a 10-year high.」
Some people feel very happy about it,
while others start to feel anxious.
But most people will have a question in their minds:
👉 The Ringgit strengthening, what does it have to do with me?
Today's article,
does not side with the government or the banks,
we will use everyday examples,
to clarify one thing:
The Ringgit strengthening,
is a change where “some are happy,
and some are hurt.”
📌 First, let's clarify what is meant by ‘The Ringgit strengthening’
Before:
1 US dollar = 4.7 Malaysian Ringgit
Now:
1 US dollar = 4.0 Malaysian Ringgit
It doesn't mean you have become rich,
but rather 👉 with the same US dollar, you can buy with less Malaysian Ringgit.
Sounds good, right?
But the problem is:
not everyone is 'buying things'.
The first batch of people 'sneering' 😄
(they really feel it)
① People who love to buy imported goods: happy
You can think like this 👇
iPhone
Car parts
Medicines
Milk powder
Overseas subscriptions (Netflix, ChatGPT, software)
Most of these are settled in US dollars.
👉 When the Malaysian Ringgit is strong,
the prices feel like they have a 5%–10% discount.
So you will find:
the same amount of money feels 'more durable'
Life pressure seems to ease a bit.
② People going abroad, studying, or traveling: happy
Previously, when you went to Japan, South Korea, or Europe:
you were constantly calculating in your mind—
‘Oh, exchanging money hurts.’
Now that the Malaysian Ringgit is a bit stronger:
Hotels don't seem so 'eye-watering'
Dining doesn't seem so painful.
👉 The world seems 'not so expensive anymore'.
③ People with savings, buying government bonds, or blue-chip stocks: happy
When the Malaysian Ringgit stabilizes and strengthens:
Foreign capital is more willing to come in.
Bank interest rates and bonds are steadier.
📈 This type of person usually has:
cash
assets
savings habits
They are not getting rich,
but they sleep more soundly.
💢 On the other hand, there is a group of people starting to frown 😐
(they just don't say much in the news)
④ Factory owners, exporters: starting to get headaches
Imagine this 👇
Suppose you have a factory in Penang,
selling products to the USA.
💢 Previously:
American customers give you USD 100
and you exchange it for RM 470.
💢 Now:
the same USD 100
only exchanges for RM 400.
❗ You did nothing wrong.
❗ The order quantity hasn't changed.
❗ Worker salaries haven't changed.
But you received 70 Malaysian Ringgit less.
👉 This is the appreciation of the Malaysian Ringgit, a 'silent harm' to exporters.
⑤ Manufacturing employees: pressure slowly trickles down
When the boss earns less, what will they do?
First, hold on
then cut costs.
In the end, it might mean:
fewer overtime hours
no bonuses
or even layoffs.
⚠️ It doesn't happen immediately, but slowly.
So many times:
the news says 'the economy is good',
but factory workers are becoming increasingly uneasy.
⑥ Tourism and service industries: not very happy
You can compare like this 👇
Foreign tourists choosing countries:
Go to Thailand: cheap
Go to Vietnam: cheaper
Go to Malaysia:
‘Hey, it doesn't seem that worthwhile anymore?’
When the Malaysian Ringgit is strong,
👉 we become 'more expensive'.
It's not the five-star hotels that are affected,
but rather:
small homestays
small restaurants
local guides, drivers
night markets, small vendors.
📌 So the real key is not 'strong or not strong'
but 'strong for whom' ⚖️
You can think of the country's economy as a family:
When the Malaysian Ringgit strengthens:
Buyers: happy
Sellers: hurt.
What kind of country is Malaysia?
👉 An export-oriented country + a manufacturing country.
What does this represent?
If the Malaysian Ringgit strengthens too quickly or for too long,
sellers will face more and more difficulties.
📌 What kind of 'strengthening of the Malaysian Ringgit' is a good thing?
What kind is a warning sign? 🚦
✅ Healthy strengthening (everyone gradually adapts)
Gradual increase
Wages keep up
Productivity improves
Not based on speculation.
👉 This is a 'national upgrade type' of strength.
❌ Dangerous strengthening (laying mines)
Increases too quickly
Relying on hot money
Relying on short-term emotions
No supporting policies
👉 It looks great in the short term,
but it may hurt more in the long run.
📌 A piece of truth for ordinary Malaysians
The strengthening of the Malaysian Ringgit does not mean 'the country has become rich',
but rather:
money is being redistributed among different people.
Consumers: a bit more space
Exporters: a bit less profit
Workers: it depends on which industry you are in.
The strengthening of the Malaysian Ringgit,
is not a win for everyone,
but a change where 'some laugh,
and some endure'.
Understanding this, you won't just be happy hearing the news,
and you won't be led by emotions.
#Share this with your friends for them to understand.
