Walrus (WAL): A Professional and Trust-Focused Data Infrastructure for Web3 | @Walrus 🦭/acc| #WalruWalrus (WAL): A Professional and Trust-Focused Data Infrastructure for Web3 | @WalrusProtocol 🦭/acc| #walrus | $WAL | Walrus is a decentralized data storage and availability protocol built to address one of Web3’s most persistent structural challenges how to store, manage, and serve large volumes of data without sacrificing decentralization, privacy, or reliability. While blockchains excel at transaction finality and smart contract execution, they are not designed for large-scale data storage. Walrus fills this gap by acting as a dedicated data layer that works alongside blockchains rather than burdening them. At a fundamental level, Walrus is designed around the principle of data ownership. In traditional systems, data is stored on centralized servers controlled by corporations, exposing users to risks such as censorship, outages, surveillance, and vendor lock-in. Walrus replaces this model with a decentralized architecture where data is distributed across independent nodes and controlled through cryptography, not corporate policy. The protocol is built on the Sui, leveraging Sui’s high-throughput, low-latency, and object-based architecture. This design choice is strategic. Sui handles execution, consensus, and settlement efficiently, while Walrus focuses exclusively on scalable data storage and availability. Together, they form a modular system where each layer does what it is best designed to do. Walrus uses a blob-based storage model combined with erasure coding. Large files are split into fragments, encoded with redundancy, and distributed across the network. Unlike simple replication, erasure coding allows data to be reconstructed even if some nodes are unavailable, while using significantly less storage overhead. This improves both reliability and cost efficiency, making Walrus suitable for large-scale, long-term data storage.
