Artificial intelligence dominates today’s technology conversations. From chatbots to generative models, most of the excitement is focused on software intelligence. While exploring the work being done by Fabric Foundation, this question kept coming to mind. Instead of simply trusting machines to do what they claim, the idea is to allow them to prove their actions through transparent, verifiable systems.
Today’s “smart” devices are actually far less trustworthy than we assume. A robot vacuum might map your home and navigate through rooms, but the data it collects is often stored on private servers controlled by the manufacturer. If something goes wrong—like a navigation failure or a device damaging something—there is rarely a transparent record of what really happened. In most cases, users are simply expected to trust the system.
This is where verifiable robotics becomes interesting. The concept is that machines could generate cryptographic proof of the data they collect, the computations they run, and the actions they perform. These proofs could then be recorded on a public ledger, creating a transparent record of machine activity. Instead of relying on closed systems, robots could become auditable systems where actions can be independently verified.
Another fascinating angle is the idea of robots acting as autonomous economic agents. Instead of just following commands, machines could coordinate with other machines and services in real time. For example, a delivery drone might locate a charging station during a route, negotiate access, pay using $ROBO, and verify that the energy was actually delivered. Both systems would have a verifiable record of the transaction, removing the need for centralized intermediaries.
