The FBI, in collaboration with French authorities, has arrested John Daghita, a teenager accused of stealing over $46 million in cryptocurrency from the US Marshals Service. Daghita, allegedly exploited access credentials belonging to his father, a contractor working with US authorities, to orchestrate the theft.
The investigation, led by blockchain analyst ZachXBT, traced Daghita's activities after he began flunting his newfound wealth on social media. He was apprehended on the island of Saint Martin by the French Gendarmerie's elite tactical unit, in a joint operation with the FBI.
Daghita's father, Dean Daghita, is president and CEO of Command Services & Support (CMDSS), a Virginia-based firm contracted by the US Marshals Service to manage seized digital assets. The stolen funds are reportedly linked to assets seized in the 2016 Bitfinex hack.
