The Midnight Network signals a real turning point in how people think about blockchains. Instead of sticking to the old “total transparency” idea, Midnight pushes for what its creators call Rational Privacy. Input Output Global (IOG) built it, led by Charles Hoskinson from Cardano. They first announced the project back in November 2022 to tackle what they call the “Glass House” problem. Basically, businesses and regular folks shy away from public blockchains because every single detail about every transaction stays out in the open forever.

Midnight isn’t just another Cardano add on, it is grown into it's own thing i.e a Layer 1 “partner chain.” So, it runs it's own ledger but connects to Cardano to tap into it's security and liquidity. At the core, Midnight relies on zk SNARKs. These cryptographic tools let users prove something, like being over 18 or having enough money, without showing the actual data behind the claim.

They also split the network economy into two separate tokens. NIGHT is the visible, tradable governance and staking token. DUST, on the other hand, stays hidden and isn’t transferable. You get it by holding NIGHT, and it fuels private transactions. If you don’t use your DUST, it fades away, which stops people from hoarding it.

Looking at the timeline, Midnight’s been busy. The devnet opened for developers in late 2023. Not long after, they dropped the “Nightpaper” and hosted the first Midnight Summit in November 2025, drawing over 450 builders to hear about the project’s long term plan.

Then there was the Glacier Drop in 2025. It was huge, as 4.5 billion NIGHT tokens went out to more than 8 million wallets on eight major ecosystems, including giants like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.

The roadmap breaks into four big phases, called the Four Gates. December 2025 saw Hilo which NIGHT launched on Cardano, bringing in liquidity and exchange access. Next up, Kūkolu in early 2026, kicked off the federated mainnet, where partners and even a Fortune 500 company rolled out the first privacy focused dApps. After that, Mōhalu in mid 2026, started bringing Cardano Stake Pool Operators on board to push for more decentralization. The last step, Hua in late 2026, aims for full decentralization and seamless cross chain connections.

One thing Midnight really tries to do is open up cryptography to more people. They created Compact, a smart contract language that feels a lot like TypeScript. If you are a Web2 developer, you can jump in and build zero-knowledge apps without being a cryptography expert. That is a big deal for making privacy tech way more accessible.
