Did anyone ever imagine that a young man who once sold burgers at McDonald’s would, a few decades later, become one of the richest people in the world? His name is Changpeng Zhao. The world knows him simply as “CZ.”
He is the founder of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. In recent years, he even served time in a U.S. prison. However, he is now back in the headlines after receiving a full presidential pardon and releasing his latest memoir.
🌍 Who is CZ, and why is the whole world talking about him?
Born in China and later immigrating to Canada, CZ began his career as a software engineer. In 2017, he founded Binance and, within just eight months, managed to turn it into the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platform.
As of March 2026, Forbes estimates his net worth at $111.8 billion, making him the 17th richest person in the world. The sheer scale of the business he built also drew the serious attention of the U.S. government.
⚖️ Violation of banking laws and prison sentence
In November 2023, CZ pleaded guilty in a U.S. court. The charge against him was violating U.S. banking secrecy laws related to preventing money laundering. As a result, Binance was required to pay a record $4.3 billion fine, and CZ had to step down from his position as CEO.
At the time, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated that Binance had neglected its legal responsibilities in pursuit of profit, allowing terrorists and criminals to move funds through the platform. CZ served a four-month prison sentence and used that time to begin writing his life story.
🟡 Trump’s presidential pardon and the controversy
In October 2025, then U.S. President Donald Trump granted CZ a full presidential pardon, surprising the world. Many have alleged that political and business dealings were behind this decision.
Reports suggest that Binance provided technical support to a crypto project linked to the Trump family called “World Liberty Financial.” Politicians such as Senator Elizabeth Warren described this as a “corrupt deal.” However, Trump stated that he did not know who CZ was.
📖 New book and future direction
On April 8, 2026, CZ released his memoir titled Freedom of Money. In the book, he claims that rival business figures paid millions of dollars in bribes to the U.S. government in an attempt to prevent his pardon.
Today, CZ has transformed from a former inmate into an influential figure who advises world leaders. He is currently providing guidance to around 12 countries on crypto regulation and the digitization of national assets.
💬 What do you think?
In just about two years after his imprisonment, CZ has managed to re-emerge as one of the most powerful figures in the world. Is he a visionary leader who revolutionized the crypto industry, or someone who used power and wealth to escape the law?
