Alarabiya:
" “Anthropic” acquires the data center that Musk desperately needed. "
In a surprise move that could reshape the competitive landscape in the race for artificial intelligence, Anthropic, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot, has received a massive boost in computing power after SpaceX leased the entire capacity of its Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee, to the company.
According to a report published by The Wall Street Journal, the agreement, which was signed in May 2026, gives Anthropic access to more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, in addition to more than 300 megawatts of computing power—huge numbers in the world of AI model development.
A Data Center Crucial to Grok
The irony lies in the fact that this infrastructure represented a strategic advantage that was supposed to benefit Elon Musk’s xAI, the developer of the Grok chatbot.
Instead, the center’s capabilities are now available to a direct competitor, Claude, giving Anthropic a major boost at a time when AI companies are racing to secure the power, processors, and infrastructure needed to train and run advanced models.
"A Major Boost for Cloud."
The agreement helps Anthropic alleviate the growing pressure on its paid Cloud services, such as Cloud Pro and Cloud Max, as demand for the model continues to rise.
The new computing capacity is expected to contribute to:
- Improved response times.
- Supporting more intensive workloads.
- Reducing limitations on paid plans.
- Accelerating the development of future models.
Although no direct benefits for users have been announced yet, the scale of the new resources suggests that the company is preparing for a major expansion.
For SpaceX, the deal represents an opportunity to turn unused data center capacity into a source of revenue, especially given the growing talk of potential preparations for a future initial public offering.
The move also highlights the increasingly pragmatic nature of the AI industry, where companies can collaborate even with competitors if commercial interests outweigh differences.
