Parshat Vayikra opens with a typographical oddity: the word "Vayikra" (And He called) has a strangely small Aleph at the end. Now, for those unfamiliar with Torah calligraphy, this isn’t just a cosmic font glitch. The Torah doesn’t do typos. So what’s going on here?
Moshe vs. Bilam: A Tale of Two Callings
Moshe, in his trademark humility, didn’t want to make it seem like Hashem gave him a VIP, front-row, backstage-pass kind of calling. He wanted to write "Vayikar" (And He happened upon him), the same term used for Bilam the not-so-great prophet (Numbers 23:4). Bilam, you’ll recall, is the guy whose most profound spiritual moment involved losing an argument with his own donkey. Not exactly someone Moshe should be compared to.
But Moshe insisted: “I don’t want to make a big deal out of this prophecy thing.”
Hashem, however, disagreed: “Moshe, you’re not Bilam. You get a personal call, not a cosmic pocket dial.”
So they reached a compromise: the Aleph stays, but it’s written tiny—visible, but barely.
This is next-level humility jiu-jitsu. Moshe knew that denying his greatness outright would be false modesty (“Oh, me? I just split a sea and spoke to G-d face-to-face, but it was nothing, really”). Instead, he found a way to acknowledge the truth without making it all about him.
