Aztec Labs Hits the Spotlight with Another Vulnerability Incident: About $2 Million Transferred from Deprecated Contracts

Aztec Labs has announced they are investigating a potential vulnerability incident involving their Aztec payment product launched in 2021 and ceased operations in 2022. Approximately $2 million has been transferred from immutable smart contracts. Aztec Labs states they do not hold the admin keys to this system and cannot control it.

This marks another standalone security incident following the Aztec Connect vulnerability event on June 14.

Why It Matters: Even DeFi protocols that have been inactive for two years can still be exploited due to immutable contracts, serving as a reminder to the industry: the "permanent exposure" risk of on-chain smart contracts cannot be overlooked, and project teams need to establish a solid decommissioning mechanism for legacy protocols.
