What Problem Is Agentic Finance Actually Solving?I kept coming back to one question while reading about agentic finance. Do AI agents really need to become smarter, or do they just need better boundaries? Most discussions focus on what an AI agent can automate once it has control over assets. What caught my attention was everything that happens before a transaction is allowed to go through. One part of Newton Protocol made me stop for a while. An agent can decide to move funds, but that decision isn't enough on its own. Before anything reaches the blockchain, the request can be checked against policies that were written long before the agent ever made its choice. That small detail changed how I looked at the whole design. The more I thought about it, the less it felt like traditional automation. Smart contracts are great at executing instructions, but they don't usually ask whether those instructions still make sense in a changing environment. Newton tries to separate those two ideas. First comes the decision. Then comes permission. A treasury agent is probably the easiest example. It might spot a vault with a better yield and prepare to move capital there. But instead of executing immediately, it can be required to satisfy conditions first, maybe liquidity is too low, maybe the destination isn't approved yet, or maybe an external data source says the timing isn't right. The transaction waits until those checks are satisfied. What interested me wasn't the delay itself. It was the fact that the friction hasn't disappeared. It's simply happening so quickly that most users may never notice it's there. That's very different from removing friction altogether. I'm still not convinced every protocol needs this approach.
