Homma was a rice trader who worked at the Dojima Rice Exchange in Osaka. Rice was the most valuable and essential commodity in Japan at that time, and the Osaka exchange was the centre of trade for this commodity. Issuu

Based on years of rice price movements and thorough analysis, Homma began to study the psychological side of trading and investors' behaviour in the market. Honma's trading techniques earned him the nickname "the God of Markets" and made the Honma family the wealthiest merchant family in Edo-era Japan. He is estimated to have made more than $10 billion over his lifetime, adjusted for inflation, and was awarded the honorary title of Samurai for his work as a financial advisor to the Japanese government.
