I am not sure if my reaction to OpenGradient is curiosity or just something I have gotten used to from experiences. Whenever I hear the words "infrastructure" I instinctively look for where it will cause problems. Not if it will cause problems but where it will cause problems.

The infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence has a quiet importance to it. It is no longer something that is being tried out on the side. Artificial Intelligence models are being used in systems that feel like they really matter.. Most of the execution layer is controlled by a single entity by default. We trust the companies that provide these services to run the model to keep track of the results accurately to manage updates without making small changes that can add up over time. We trust them to do all of these things without thinking about it.

A network that tries to distribute the hosting and verification of Artificial Intelligence models feels like an attempt to make that trust more explicit. To give the history of the models a home outside of a company. I can see why that is important.

Still making something decentralized introduces its set of problems. The incentives for people to participate do not stay the same over time. The people who operate the network respond to the costs. Verification, especially when the network is being used a lot is not free. I have watched decentralized systems start out with a lot of participants and end up relying on a few serious ones. Being transparent did not prevent the network from becoming controlled by an enti-ties it just made it clear what was happening.

Then there is the question of what happens when an Artificial Intelligence driven decision causes real harm. When the regulators come to investigate does a distributed network make it clear who is responsible or does it make it harder to figure out who is responsible.

Maybe OpenGradient is trying to figure out how to build the layers like validation and accountability before Artificial Intelligence becomes a fundamental part of our infrastructure.

non vedo subito un prodotto. Vedo una reazione. Una risposta alla silenziosa centralizzazione dell'infrastruttura AI. I modelli potrebbero essere aperti in teoria, ma l'hosting, l'inferenza, la verifica, quel livello è sempre più consolidato. Comodo, sì. Efficiente, probabilmente.
Ma anche opaco.

La mia posizione predefinita dopo alcuni cicli è scetticismo. Le reti decentralizzate suonano bene finché non devono sopravvivere alla complessità del mondo reale. Gli incentivi cambiano. Gli operatori si ritirano. I pochi che rimangono diventano i gatekeeper di fatto.
Ho visto succedere tutto questo più di una volta.
