Everywhere you go there’s the same pattern: the government promising progress while protecting only its own. They celebrate glossy “green” projects in photo ops, but when young Ethiopians try to build something — trade, innovate, take risks — the state’s first instinct is control: laws used as a club, accounts frozen, opportunity strangled.

This is the central problem: a leadership that sees money, not the future. While other countries embrace innovation and create legal paths for new economies, our leaders punish the people who try to lift themselves. If the state uses power to benefit the few and to crush anyone outside the inner circle, development becomes a slogan, not a reality.

We deserve a country that invests in education, digital jobs, and fair rules — not one that chooses short-term image projects over long-term opportunity. Ethiopia can grow. But it will only happen when our institutions protect entrepreneurs, not hunt them. The Ethiopian government is reportedly investigating individuals involved in buying and selling on the P2P crypto market, even going as far as freezing their accounts.

Crypto was meant to be free from government interference — that was the whole point. It’s really disappointing to see this happening in a country ranked among the world’s top 30 crypto trading nations. Instead of supporting innovation and empowering traders to succeed, the government is blocking opportunities that could actually benefit the economy.

It’s a short-sighted and unfortunate move for a developing country that should be encouraging progress, not stifling it.
