Let me start with the number that stopped me.
Deepfake files surged from 500,000 in 2023 to 8 million by 2025Arweave. Fraud attempts using synthetic media increased by 2,137% over three years. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, there were 19% more deepfake incidents than in all of 2024 combined. One in every twenty identity verification failures is now linked to deepfakes.

And then there's the human detection rate. When shown a high-quality deepfake video, people correctly identify it just 24.5% of the time. In a 2025 study by iProov, only 0.1% of participants correctly identified all fake and real media presented to them.TON

That figure should reframe every conversation about identity verification infrastructure we're having in 2026. The question is no longer whether humans can reliably detect synthetic fraud. We can't. The question is what the technical stack underneath identity claims needs to look like when the face you're seeing might be fabricated.
Gartner put it plainly: by 2026, 30% of enterprises will no longer consider standalone identity verification solutions to be reliable in isolation. That prediction is already directionally true. The verification model that served the previous decade show your face, prove your document, pass the check is broken at the foundation because the face is now falsifiable at scale.
The answer the industry keeps reaching for is detection better AI to catch deepfakes, liveness checks, motion analysis, injection attack prevention. These are necessary defenses, and I'm not dismissing them. But detection is reactive. It chases the current generation of fakes while the generation being trained today is already more convincing than the one being detected.
What I'm more interested in is the attestation layer underneath verification.
Sign Protocol's foundational document describes verifiable trust as a system that ensures soundness and verifiability where information is well-defined and confirmable, hardness and immutability where information is tamper-proof through cryptographic finalization, and reliability where information is always accessible for verification.
Apply those three properties specifically to the deepfake problem. The current failure mode isn't that identity documents are fake. It's that the link between a claimed identity and the person presenting it is severable at the point of biometric verification. A deepfake doesn't forge a document; it forges the human.Arweave
An attestation-based trust layer doesn't solve biometric forgery directly. But it changes the attack surface in important ways. When identity credentials are cryptographically registered on-chain and the attestation is signed by a verifiable issuer with an on-chain record, the question shifts from "does this face match this person" to "does this claimed credential exist, who issued it, and is it still valid."

Sign Protocol's architecture supports revocable attestations with built-in expiry through the maxValidFor parameter on each schema, and schema hook contracts that execute custom validation logic at the time of attestation use. A credential that has been compromised can be revoked on-chain. A verification check against that credential immediately fails, regardless of whether the face presenting it is real or synthesized.TON
That revocability is the gap that pure biometric detection doesn't close. Deepfake tooling can produce a convincing face faster than detection models can adapt. But it cannot retroactively validate a credential that has been revoked at the schema level.
My skepticism about the deepfake problem runs deep because the attack surface keeps expanding. Deepfakes now account for 40% of all biometric fraud attempts, and the tools generating them are open-source, cheap, and require only three seconds of audio to clone a voice with 85% accuracy.Arweave
No single infrastructure layer solves this.
But an attestation layer that makes credential validity independently verifiable, revocable in real time, and immune to biometric spoofing at the verification step addresses the part of the problem that detection cannot.
The deepfake is a forgery of presence. The attestation is a record of legitimacy.
Those are different problems. They need different defenses.
