At the start, full transparency made sense. It built trust in a system where no one trusted anyone. But now things are changing. Real users are coming in. Businesses are starting to pay attention. And suddenly, exposing everything doesn’t feel like a strength anymore.
If every transaction, every activity, and even metadata is visible, it creates risk. Not just for individuals, but for companies as well. That’s probably one of the reasons why a lot of serious adoption is still limited.
This is where Midnight caught my attention.
At first glance, it looks like another blockchain project. But when you actually look into it, the focus is different. It’s not trying to remove transparency - it’s trying to make it smarter.
The idea of selective disclosure is what stood out to me the most. Instead of showing everything, you only reveal what’s necessary. You can prove something is valid without exposing the actual data behind it.
That changes a lot.
For example, imagine verifying identity without sharing personal details. Or proving ownership of an asset without revealing who you are. Even simple things like voting or surveys become more meaningful when privacy is protected.
Another interesting part is how Midnight approaches usability. A lot of ZK-based systems are powerful but hard to work with. Here, it feels like they’re trying to make things more practical for developers instead of overly complex.
And honestly, that matters more than people think.
Because at the end of the day, technology only wins if people can actually use it.
I don’t think privacy is something people fully care about yet. But once exposure starts causing real problems, that mindset will change quickly.
And when that happens, projects that already focused on privacy - like Midnight - might be ahead of the curve.
