The BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) have launched a new payment system called UNIT, based on a currency that combines gold and BRICS currencies, with a composition of 40% in gold and 60% in national currencies.

This system represents a significant alternative to traditional Western settlement mechanisms, offering more than 30 nations a new option for international trade transactions in precious metals.

The choice to back UNIT with gold reflects the increasing focus of BRICS nations on prudence and financial stability, especially in a context of rising geopolitical and economic volatility.

The gold reserves of these countries are steadily increasing: Brazil added 16 tons in September 2025, while Russia, China, and India hold 2,336, 2,298, and 880 tons of gold respectively, positioning themselves among the largest holders globally.

Globally, central banks have continued to increase their gold acquisitions, surpassing 1,000 tons per year from 2022 to 2024, the longest positive streak in modern history.

This trend underscores the strategic importance of gold as a reserve asset and as a basis for alternative payment systems like UNIT.

The launch of UNIT positions the BRICS as key players in redefining global monetary balances, offering tools that are more independent of dominant Western financial infrastructures and strengthening economic cooperation among emerging countries.
