A $255B blockchain was born the day a video game changed a spell without asking.
Back in 2010, a 16-year-old Vitalik Buterin was playing World of Warcraft when one of his favourite Warlock abilities was suddenly removed. No warning. No explanation. He later said it hit him so hard that he “cried himself to sleep.” But more than the game itself, it made him question something deeper — what happens when everything is controlled by a single authority?
That thought stayed with him.
Not long after, his father introduced him to Bitcoin. Vitalik was fascinated, but he couldn’t afford to invest, and mining wasn’t realistic for him either. So he did what he could — he started writing about crypto online, earning small payments in $BTC . Just a few dollars per article at the time.
Those early steps pulled him deeper into the space. As a teenager, he co-founded Bitcoin Magazine and began thinking seriously about how blockchain systems could be improved. When his ideas didn’t fit into Bitcoin’s direction, he didn’t force it — he built something new.
That idea became Ethereum $ETH .
At 19, he wrote the Ethereum whitepaper. Within weeks, developers started reaching out to join the project. Later, he dropped out of university after receiving a Thiel Fellowship and focused fully on building.
Ethereum launched when he was just 21.
Early supporters who invested small amounts — even a few hundred dollars — would later see life-changing returns as Ethereum grew into a multi-hundred-billion-dollar ecosystem.
