Blockchain analytics firm Arkham has identified approximately 6,300 $BTC worth $740 million as belonging to the United Arab Emirates government. The holdings were accumulated through Citadel Mining operations rather than direct market purchases.
Citadel, a publicly listed mining company, is majority-owned by the UAE's Royal Group through International Holding Company (IHC). The firm operates an 80,000-square-meter Bitcoin mining facility on Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi, constructed in 2022.
Approximately 9,300 Bitcoin have been mined to date, with at least 6,300 tokens still held in government wallets. The UAE becomes the fourth-largest sovereign Bitcoin holder globally, joining the United States and United Kingdom in significant holdings.
Abu Dhabi royal family member Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan controls the Royal Group which holds 61% of IHC. Arkham's research also identified Phoenix Group, another UAE mining company, holding $3.2 million in Bitcoin assets.
