Aitabdel Salem, a 41-year-old Queens resident, sat in Rikers Island for almost five months because of a baffling bail miscommunication.

Back in November 2014, he was arrested for allegedly shoplifting a coat and assaulting an NYPD officer. His bail was originally set at $25,000.

When the assault charge was dropped, only two minor charges, tampering and mischief remained. Each of those had a $1 bail, which meant he could have secured his freedom fo just $2.

But here's the kicker: no one told him this change. Not his lawyer, not any court official. Believing he still owed $25,000, he stayed behind bars until April 2015.

Just a few weeks after his release Salem was arrested again, this time for missing a court date on the assault charge. But the court notice for that date had been returned undelivered.

Once again, he faced an even higher bail, now $30,000.
