Bitlayer — the first Bitcoin security-equivalent Layer 2 based on the BitVM paradigm. Previously, in our review of the Movement project, we discussed what L2 solutions are and their purposes. You can also learn more about this concept here: Binance Academy. The first concepts of layer-2 started emerging in the mid-2010s. Lightning Network, first introduced in 2015, is the initial L2 blockchain solution implemented on the Bitcoin infrastructure. Lightning Network aims to scale Bitcoin and offers faster and cheaper transactions for the first cryptocurrency, but it does not support smart contracts. Currently, the L2 narrative is gaining more and more attention from the crypto-enthusiast community. L2 solutions have emerged as a response to the key limitations and challenges of first-generation blockchain platforms: limited throughput, high fees, low confirmation speed, etc. Layer-2 provides mechanisms to enhance the scalability, efficiency, and functionality of the existing infrastructure. For many years, the focus has been predominantly on Ethereum, which offers competitive solutions for scaling development-related applications, such as L2 (e.g., Arbitrum, OP Mainnet, etc.), subnets (e.g., Avalanche’s Evergreen), and more. However, in 2023, following recent updates to Bitcoin L1, the development of the BRC-20 standard, and Ordinals, there has been a noticeable shift. Developers are increasingly refocusing on Bitcoin to address the Bitcoin L1 Trilemma issues. #bitlayerlabs
