WASHINGTON, D.C. — What began as a night of political tradition and comedic roasts turned into a scene of panic on Saturday evening as gunfire erupted at the Washington Hilton, forcing the immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
The Breach
At approximately 8:36 PM, as guests were settling into the International Ballroom, a lone gunman—identified by authorities as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen—charged a security checkpoint in the hotel lobby. According to the Secret Service, Allen bypassed metal detectors before being intercepted by agents.
During the ensuing struggle, a Secret Service officer was struck by a round but was saved by his ballistic vest. The officer is currently in stable condition.
The Evacuation
Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere shifted instantly from gala to lockdown. Footage from the event shows Secret Service agents rushing the President and First Lady through a service exit. Vice President JD Vance was also safely escorted from the premises.
"It happened in a flash," said one attendee. "One minute we were laughing at the opening remarks, the next, agents were shouting for everyone to get down or move to the rear of the room."
The Suspect and Motive
Cole Tomas Allen, a former teacher and video game developer from Torrance, California, is currently in federal custody. While his specific motives remain under investigation, the FBI is looking into potential "lone wolf" radicalization. This incident marks the fourth major security breach or assassination attempt involving Donald Trump since 2024, raising fresh questions about the safety of high-profile political figures in an increasingly volatile climate.
Aftermath
The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) officially cancelled the remainder of the evening’s program. In a brief statement via Truth Social late Saturday night, President Trump thanked the Secret Service for their "bravery and lightning-fast response," confirming that he and the First Lady are unharmed.
The Washington Hilton remains a crime scene as federal investigators process the lobby area.
