30 June – First Martyrs of the Church of Rome

During the persecution under Emperor Nero following the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, many Christians were brutally tortured and executed. Some were covered with the skins of wild beasts and torn by dogs, others crucified, and some burned alive as human torches to light Nero’s gardens. These anonymous early martyrs gave heroic witness to Christ in the very heart of the empire, strengthening the young Church through their blood. Their memory is honored as the seed of Christianity in Rome.

“The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians.” — Tertullian

The nameless heroes whose sacrifice helped plant the faith firmly in Rome — reminding us that persecution cannot extinguish the light of Christ but only spreads it further.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of the First Martyrs of Rome, grant us courage to witness to You in difficult times, fidelity even unto death, and the grace to be seeds of new life in the Church.
