⚠️ Vitalik Raises a Serious Concern About Ethereum’s Future

Vitalik Buterin recently highlighted an issue that goes far beyond price, upgrades, or new L2s. His concern is about trustlessness, the very principle Ethereum was built on. As Ethereum’s technology stack becomes more advanced, it’s also becoming so complex that only a small group of expert developers can fully understand the protocol end to end. That creates a paradox. We removed trust from banks, but are we slowly replacing it with trust in a technical elite?

Vitalik argues that true trustlessness isn’t just about removing intermediaries, but about increasing the number of people who can actually verify and understand how the system works. If only a handful of people can do that, Ethereum risks drifting away from its core idea.

The solution, according to him, isn’t adding more features, but simplifying the system. Ideas like stateless clients could lower the barrier to running a node, while simpler L2 designs that rely more on Ethereum’s base-layer security could reduce unnecessary complexity. Technologies such as Verkle Trees and PeerDAS are early steps in this direction.

For long-term believers, this is an important discussion. A simpler and more verifiable Ethereum strengthens decentralization and security, which ultimately benefits investors, developers, and users alike. The real question is whether the ecosystem is willing to choose simplification over constant complexity, or whether technological progress inevitably makes systems harder to understand.
