🇯🇵 JAPAN JUST CLEARED A BIG HURDLE TO RESTART THE WORLD’S LARGEST NUCLEAR PLANT
Japan is edging closer to switching back on Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, the world’s largest nuclear power plant, after a key regional vote in Niigata backed the governor who supports the restart.
That matters because Japan shut down 54 reactors after the 2011 quake and tsunami triggered the Fukushima disaster, and the country has only restarted 14 of the 33 reactors still considered operable.
The twist is that Kashiwazaki-Kariwa would be run by TEPCO, the same company behind Fukushima, which is why this restart comes with a side of nervous sweating.
Inside the assembly, politicians argued over whether this reflects what residents actually want.
Outside, demonstrators held “No Nukes” signs, booing the very premise that TEPCO can be trusted with the restart.
TEPCO has pledged 100 billion yen over 10 years for the prefecture, but an October survey found 60% of residents said restart conditions were not met, and nearly 70% worried about TEPCO running it.
If TEPCO reactivates the first reactor, it could raise Tokyo-area electricity supply by about 2%, as Japan tries to cut fossil fuel imports and meet climate targets while AI data centers guzzle power.
