For robotics networks, that choice is happening right now, and most of the industry is quietly choosing the closed option without anyone calling it a decision.

This is not a new problem. It is the closed garden problem that software has wrestled with for decades, transplanted into physical infrastructure with higher stakes. When software platforms closed their gardens, developers lost access to data and had to rebuild from scratch on every new platform. When robot networks close their gardens, the consequences are heavier because the data being locked away is not user preferences or click patterns — it is operational knowledge about how autonomous machines behave in real physical environments, knowledge that took real time and real risk to generate.

What makes the open versus closed question urgent right now is the pace of capability development. The gap between what a robot trained on shared, open datasets can do versus what a robot trained only on one operator's proprietary data can do is widening fast. OpenMind's work on shared robot training infrastructure and NVIDIA's push toward foundation models for humanoid robots both point in the same direction: the robots that will perform best in the next five years are the ones that learned from the broadest possible base of experience, not the ones locked inside the richest single operator's fleet. Closed networks are not just philosophically limiting — they are becoming a practical competitive disadvantage for the operators who choose them, even if those operators do not realize it yet.

Fabric Protocol's architecture makes the most sense to me when I read it through this lens rather than through the accountability lens I usually apply to it. The whitepaper's emphasis on avoiding closed datasets and opaque control is not just an ethical position — it is a technical bet that open networks will outperform closed ones as autonomous capabilities scale. Crowdsourced robot genesis, portable skill chips, shared validation infrastructure — these are the components of a system designed to let collective experience compound across operators rather than staying trapped inside individual silos. The honest counterargument is that closed networks exist for reasons that go beyond vendor lock-in strategies. Proprietary systems offer tighter quality control, clearer liability chains, and faster iteration cycles that open systems often struggle to match. A hospital deploying surgical assistance robots or a logistics company running tightly choreographed fulfillment operations has legitimate reasons to prefer a closed, auditable system where every variable is controlled by a single accountable vendor. The open source software world took decades to produce infrastructure reliable enough for enterprises to trust in critical systems, and there is no guarantee that open robot networks will move faster.

What I find genuinely unresolved is where the boundary should sit. Full openness produces better collective outcomes but creates coordination problems and quality risks that closed systems sidestep. Full closure produces better individual outcomes in the short term but fragments the knowledge base that everyone — including the closed operators — eventually needs to draw from as environments get more complex and edge cases accumulate faster than any single fleet can handle alone. The most interesting projects are the ones, like Fabric, that are trying to find an architecture where the shared layer is open and the operational layer is configurable, so operators get the collective intelligence benefits without surrendering the control they need to run reliable services.

The history of technology infrastructure does not give clean answers here, but it gives a consistent pattern: the platforms that tried to own everything eventually created the conditions for their own displacement, while the ones that opened the right layers at the right time became the foundations that everyone else built on. Robotics is not software and physical infrastructure does not fork as cleanly as code, but the underlying logic is the same. The question is not whether open robot networks will eventually outcompete closed ones. The question is how much accumulated knowledge gets locked away in proprietary silos before the industry figures that out.
