How Much Bitcoin Does Tesla Hold?
Tesla became one of the earliest major corporations to add Bitcoin to its balance sheet when it purchased $1.5 billion worth of BTC in early 2021. The acquisition, completed on-chain on February 1st 2021, was one of the most visible institutional endorsements of Bitcoin and immediately moved markets.
At the end of January 2021, Tesla accumulated 43,770 BTC at an average price of roughly $34,270, totaling about $1.5 billion. Bitcoin rallied sharply following the announcement, and within weeks the position had nearly doubled in value.
Mapping Tesla’s Bitcoin Wallets
Tesla’s Bitcoin holdings were originally analyzed using on-chain clustering techniques, and by cross-referencing legal disclosures on Tesla’s Bitcoin holdings. Arkham identified Tesla-associated wallets by analyzing transaction patterns, change outputs, and wallet behavior consistent with those disclosed in official releases.
The investigation followed the movement of Bitcoin from Coinbase Hot Wallets into Coinbase Prime clusters, then tracked subsequent transfers between these Coinbase Prime wallets and Coinbase. In particular, Arkham observed significant transfers around the time that Tesla disclosed sales or reductions in holdings, which matched with the evidence on-chain.
By mapping these wallet clusters and monitoring their movements over time, our analysts were able to reconstruct Tesla’s exact transaction history and cross reference exact dates and timings of their transfers.
Early Profit Taking
In March and April 2021, Tesla sold 4,670 BTC for approximately $260.2 million, generating a profit of roughly $100.2 million on these coins. Elon Musk stated that the sale was intended to demonstrate Bitcoin’s liquidity and show that a corporate treasury position could be exited without disrupting markets.
Tesla continued holding nearly 40,000 BTC through the remainder of the 2021 bull market. At the market peak in November 2021, Tesla’s Bitcoin holdings were worth roughly $1.5 billion more than their purchase cost.
The LUNA Collapse and Major Sales
The next major change occurred in May 2022, during the collapse of the Terra ecosystem. On-chain data shows Tesla transferred 30,690 BTC to Coinbase, likely to sell most of its remaining holdings during the market downturn.
These transactions were visible through large transfers from Tesla-linked wallets to Coinbase addresses. After the sales, Tesla retained only about 8,430 BTC, roughly 20% of its original holdings.
Current Holdings
Additional on-chain movements in June 2022 suggested that not all transferred coins were sold, and some BTC was moved back from Coinbase Hot Wallets. After these adjustments, Tesla’s holdings stabilized at roughly 11,500 BTC.
Tesla did not sell during the FTX collapse in late 2022, even as Bitcoin’s price halved again and the company temporarily incurred a drawdown exceeding $100 million.
Today, Tesla remains one of the largest publicly known corporate Bitcoin holders, with 11,509 BTC ($812M), standing alongside SpaceX, who also hold a significant treasury of 8,285 BTC ($584M).

Bitcoin (BTCUSD) continues to replicate the 2022 Bear Cycle, in fact it's been repeating the price action even before it as the build up sequence since 2021 is identical to the one of late 2024 - 2025.

BTC is right now at the 2nd Stage of consolidation right above the 1W MA200 (orange trend-line). The 1st Stage was on the 1W MA100 (green trend-line). With the 1W RSI oversold (below 30.00) as in June 2022, we might be facing a break below the 1W MA200 soon and new consolidation below it.

The November 2022 Bear Cycle bottom was priced exactly on the 1W MA300 (red trend-line) after it marginally broke below the 1.618 Fibonacci extension. Even though this time the bottom might be even lower (45k-40k), a $50000 entry seems technically like a good opportunity for long-term buying.
