Listen to me, O islands, and pay attention, you peoples from afar. The Lord called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified." But I said, "I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the Lord, and my recompense with my God." And now the Lord says, who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honoured in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength- he says: "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."

And they said to her, "None of your kindred is called by this name." And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marvelled. And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. And fear came on all their neighbours. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea; and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him. And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

Reflection:
In today’s reading, we see how God’s plan unfolds through chosen servants formed even before birth. Isaiah speaks of being called from his mother’s womb, shaped by God to bring light and salvation to all nations. This calling reminds us that every life has a divine purpose — we are not accidents, but part of God’s eternal design to bring His love into the world. The psalm celebrates this truth with awe: “You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” It is a reminder that God knows us completely — our thoughts, our struggles, our hidden gifts. Even when we feel our efforts are in vain, as Isaiah did, our true reward lies in the Lord, who sees every faithful act. Paul, in the second reading, connects this divine calling to the mission of John the Baptist. John’s humility shines: he prepares the way for Christ but never claims glory for himself. His mission was to turn hearts toward the Savior — a task that still calls to each believer today. In the GOSPEL, John’s birth fulfills God’s promise. His naming, “John” — meaning “God is gracious” — marks a turning point in salvation history. Zechariah’s restored speech symbolizes renewed faith and the power of obedience. This reflection reminds us that God’s hand is at work from the beginning of every life. Like Isaiah and John, we are called to serve, to shine as lights where we are placed, and to trust that God’s grace will complete what He began in us. Jesus, I trust in you.

Naqueles dias: Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, enviou mensageiros novamente a Ezequias, dizendo: "Assim falarás a Ezequias, rei de Judá: 'Não deixe que seu Deus em quem você confia te engane, prometendo que Jerusalém não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria. Eis que você ouviu o que os reis da Assíria fizeram a todas as terras, destruindo-as completamente. E você será salvo? Ezequias recebeu a carta das mãos dos mensageiros e a leu; e Ezequias subiu à casa do Senhor e a espalhou perante o Senhor. E Ezequias orou diante do Senhor, e disse: "Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, que estás entronizado acima dos querubins, tu és o Deus, tu só, de todos os reinos da terra; tu fizeste o céu e a terra. Inclina teu ouvido, ó Senhor, e ouve; abre teus olhos, ó Senhor, e vê; e ouve as palavras de Senaqueribe, que ele enviou para zombar do Deus vivo. 1ª LEITURA: 2 Crônicas 24:17-25
Após a morte de Jehoiada, os príncipes de Judá se aproximaram e prestaram obediência ao rei; então o rei os ouviu. E eles abandonaram a casa do Senhor, o Deus de seus pais, e serviram a Asherah e aos ídolos. E a ira veio sobre Judá e Jerusalém por causa dessa culpa. No entanto, ele enviou profetas entre eles para trazê-los de volta ao Senhor; estes testemunharam contra eles, mas não deram ouvidos. Então o Espírito de Deus tomou posse de Zacarias, filho de Jehoiada, o sacerdote; e ele se levantou acima do povo e disse a eles: "Assim diz Deus, 'Por que você transgride os mandamentos do Senhor, de modo que não pode prosperar? Naqueles dias: Quando Atalia, mãe de Acazias, viu que seu filho estava morto, levantou-se e destruiu toda a família real. Mas Joasabe, filha do rei Jorão, irmã de Acazias, tomou Joás, filho de Acazias, e o roubou entre os filhos do rei que estavam prestes a ser mortos, e o escondeu com sua ama em um quarto. Assim, ela o escondeu de Atalia, para que não fosse morto; e ele permaneceu com ela por seis anos, escondido na casa do Senhor, enquanto Atalia reinava sobre a terra. Mas no sétimo ano, Joiada enviou e trouxe os capitães dos caritas e dos guardas, e fez com que viessem a ele na casa do Senhor; e fez uma aliança com eles e os colocou sob juramento na casa do Senhor, e lhes mostrou o filho do rei. Os capitães fizeram conforme tudo o que o sacerdote Joiada ordenou, e cada um trouxe seus homens que iam de folga no sábado, com aqueles que iam entrar de serviço no sábado, e vieram ao sacerdote Joiada. E o sacerdote entregou aos capitães as lanças e escudos que pertenciam ao rei Davi, que estavam na casa do Senhor; e os guardas ficaram, cada homem com suas armas na mão, do lado sul da casa até o lado norte da casa, ao redor do altar e da casa. Quando Atalia ouviu o barulho da guarda e do povo, ela foi à casa do Senhor para o povo; e quando olhou, lá estava o rei em pé junto ao pilar, conforme o costume, e os capitães e os trompetistas ao lado do rei, e todo o povo da terra se alegrando e tocando trompetes. E Atalia rasgou suas roupas e gritou: "Traição! Traição!" Então Joiada, o sacerdote, ordenou aos capitães que estavam sobre o exército: "Tragam-na para fora entre as fileiras; e matem com a espada qualquer um que a seguir." Pois o sacerdote disse: "Que ela não seja morta na casa do Senhor." Assim, eles colocaram as mãos sobre ela; e ela passou pela entrada dos cavalos até a casa do rei, e lá foi morta. O profeta Elias surgiu como um fogo, e sua palavra queimava como uma tocha. Ele trouxe uma fome sobre eles, e com seu fervor fez deles poucos em número. Pela palavra do Senhor, ele fechou os céus e também três vezes fez descer fogo. Quão glorioso você foi, ó Elias, em suas obras maravilhosas! E quem tem o direito de se gabar do que você possui? Você que ressuscitou um cadáver da morte e do Hades, pela palavra do Altíssimo; que trouxe reis à destruição e homens famosos de suas camas; que ouviu a repreensão no Sinai e os julgamentos de vingança em Horeb; que ungiu reis para infligir retribuição, e profetas para sucedê-lo. Você que foi levado por um redemoinho de fogo, em uma carruagem com cavalos de fogo; você que está pronto no tempo determinado, está escrito, para acalmar a ira de Deus antes que irrompa em fúria, para virar o coração do pai para o filho, e restaurar as tribos de Jacó. Bem-aventurados aqueles que te viram, e aqueles que foram adornados em amor; pois nós também certamente viveremos. Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his coat, and rolled it up, and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "I beg you, let me inherit a double share of your spirit." And he said, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if you do not see me, it shall not be so." And as they still went on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and cried, "My father, my father! the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. And he took up the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, saying, "Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other; and Elisha went over.

Reflection:
"In today’s reading, Elijah’s departure and Elisha’s inheritance of his spirit reveal the continuity of God’s mission through faithful hearts. Elisha’s persistence — refusing to leave Elijah — reflects the true disciple’s determination to follow God’s call to the end. When Elijah is taken up in the fiery chariot, Elisha receives not just his master’s cloak but a double portion of his prophetic spirit. His first act, parting the Jordan as Elijah did, shows that God’s power remains active in those who trust and obey Him. This story reminds us that divine grace does not die with one servant; it flows on through those who remain steadfast and humble before God. In the GOSPEL, Jesus teaches that authentic righteousness is not measured by public display but by the sincerity of the heart. Acts of giving, prayer, and fasting should spring from love, not pride. God sees what is done in secret and rewards those whose devotion seeks only His approval. Together, the readings invite us to interior purity and faithful perseverance — to carry on God’s work quietly, courageously, and with hearts centered on Him, trusting that His Spirit will empower us as it did Elisha. Jesus, I trust in you.

And you shall say to him, 'Thus says the Lord, "Have you killed, and also taken possession?" And you shall say to him, 'Thus says the Lord: "In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, shall dogs lick your own blood." Ahab said to Elijah, "Have you found me, O my enemy?" He answered, "I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. Behold, I will bring evil upon you; I will utterly sweep you away, and will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel; and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you have made Israel to sin. And of Jezebel the Lord also said, 'The dogs shall eat Jezebel within the bounds of Jezreel! Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city, the dogs shall eat; and anyone of his who dies in the open country, the birds of the air shall eat." "In today’s reading, God sends Elijah to confront Ahab for his grave sin — the murder of Naboth and the unlawful seizure of his vineyard. Through the prophet, God declares judgment upon Ahab’s house, showing that no evil act escapes His justice. E depois disso, Acabe disse a Nabote: "Me dá sua vinha, pra eu fazer um jardim de vegetais, porque é perto da minha casa; e eu te dou uma vinha melhor em troca; ou, se preferir, eu te pago o valor em dinheiro." Mas Nabote respondeu a Acabe: "O Senhor me livre de te dar a herança dos meus pais." E Acabe voltou pra casa, irritado e triste, por causa do que Nabote, o jezreelita, tinha dito; pois ele tinha dito: "Não te darei a herança dos meus pais." E se deitou na cama, virou o rosto e não comeu nada. Mas Jezabel, sua esposa, veio até ele e perguntou: "Por que seu espírito está tão angustiado que você não come?"
