Key Takeaways

  • Illuvium is an open-world RPG on Ethereum where players capture and battle creatures called Illuvials.

  • ILV is the governance and revenue-sharing token; sILV2 is the non-tradable in-game currency earned through play.

  • NFTs representing Illuvials and in-game items trade on Immutable X zkEVM, a Layer-2 network that enables low-cost transactions.

  • ILV stakers receive a share of in-game revenue through an automated buyback-and-distribute mechanism via the Illuvium Vault.

Introduction

Blockchain blockchain gaming has evolved rapidly, yet few titles have combined high production-value graphics with a fully functional token economy. Illuvium set out to change that. Originally announced in 2021 and released in open beta in July 2024, it has become one of the more ambitious blockchain NFT games to date.

How Does Illuvium Work?

Illuvium is an open-world RPG built on Ethereum and powered by GameFi mechanics. Players travel across alien landscapes, defeating and capturing creatures called Illuvials. Captured Illuvials are represented as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that players can use in battles, trade on the NFT marketplace, or evolve by fusing multiple Illuvials together.

The game launched in open beta on July 25, 2024, via the Epic Games Store for PC and Mac. It consists of three interconnected titles:

  • Illuvium: Overworld, the core open-world exploration and hunting experience, powered by Unreal Engine 5.

Illuvium Arena

  • Illuvium: Arena, an auto-battler PvP mode where players use their captured Illuvials in tactical team battles.

Illuvium Arena

  • Illuvium: Zero, a separate resource collection and land management game for PC and mobile.

Illuvium Zero

All three titles share the same NFT ecosystem and ILV token economy, allowing assets earned in one game to be used in another.

How Do You Play Illuvium?

The game client is available to download from the Epic Games Store as a free-to-play application. Players create an account, connect a compatible Web3 wallet using Immutable Passport, and begin exploring the Overworld.

The core mechanic is collecting and customizing Illuvials. Each Illuvial has an affinity and a class that determine its strengths and weaknesses in battle. Players can also fuse Illuvials to create more powerful hybrid forms.

Illuvium classes

There are five classes: Fighter, Guardian, Empath, Rogue, and Psion. Players can fuse two Illuvials to create Ascended hybrid classes that combine traits of both. For example, fusing a Fighter with a Rogue produces a Slayer class.

Illuvium affinities

There are five affinities: Air, Nature, Fire, Water, and Earth. Each affinity has strengths and weaknesses against others.

Illuvium Affinities

For example, a Water Illuvial deals extra damage to Fire but is weak against Earth. Ascended Illuvials can combine affinities, creating types such as Dust (Air plus Earth) or Frost (Air plus Water).

Capturing Illuvials

To capture an Illuvial, a player must weaken it in battle and then use a shard. The shard's quality must match the Illuvial's power level. Rarer Illuvials appear as Shiny, Gold, or Holographic variants and require stronger shards. Captured Illuvials recover health over time inside their shards.

What Is the Illuvium (ILV) Token?

Illuvium uses a dual-token system. ILV is an ERC-20 governance and revenue-sharing token on Ethereum with a maximum combined supply of 10 million ILV and sILV2. Currently, approximately 9.5 million are in circulation. sILV2 is a non-tradable in-game currency earned through play-to-earn mechanics and spent directly on in-game items and upgrades.

ILV has three primary uses:

  • Governance: Holders can participate in the Illuvium DAO (the Illuvinati Council) to vote on game improvement proposals and changes to the protocol.

  • Staking: Holders can stake ILV in the Illuvium Vault to receive a share of in-game revenue through an automated buyback-and-distribute mechanism. Staking rewards are subject to a vesting period before they can be claimed as ILV.

  • In-game utility: ILV is used to purchase cosmetic upgrades, premium items, and other in-game assets through the NFT marketplace.

NFT trades take place on Immutable X zkEVM, an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution that processes transactions at significantly lower gas costs than Ethereum mainnet.

Illuvium also uses a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) called the Illuvinati Council, which allows token holders to collaborate on governance decisions that shape the game's development.

ILV Staking and Revenue Sharing

ILV staking is designed to align token holders with the long-term growth of the Illuvium ecosystem. When players spend within the game or marketplace, a portion of that revenue can be directed to the Illuvium Vault. The Vault uses these funds to buy back ILV from the market and distribute it to eligible stakers.

This creates a link between game activity and staking rewards. Rather than relying only on token emissions, Illuvium’s model aims to reward participants based on revenue generated by the ecosystem. Stakers may receive rewards in ILV, which are typically subject to vesting, or in sILV2, a non-tradable in-game currency that can be used immediately within Illuvium.

Staking also complements Illuvium’s DAO governance system. ILV holders can participate in decisions related to game development, protocol parameters, and ecosystem strategy through the Illuvinati Council. However, staking involves risks, including token price volatility, changing reward rates, and smart contract risk. Users who want to stake should refer to Illuvium’s official staking guide for current instructions and requirements.

If you want to start staking Illuvium, you’ll first need a crypto wallet like Metamask. You’ll then need to buy ILV from either a centralized or decentralized exchange. You can then head to the Illuvium staking dashboard to begin staking. In Illuvium’s earlier staking system (v2), users could choose between staking ILV directly or staking ILV/ETH liquidity provider tokens. This distinction was part of the legacy yield-farming model. Under the current staking framework (v3), users can choose between the ILV or ILV/ETH vaults, with each providing different rewards of shards per $1,000 staked per day. The v3 staking framework operates in six-month seasons, each season including its own shard calculation, leaderboard, and reward configuration.

FAQ

What is the difference between ILV and sILV2?

ILV is a tradable ERC-20 token used for governance, staking, and marketplace purchases. sILV2 is a non-tradable in-game currency earned through gameplay rewards. Staking rewards can be claimed as either ILV (with a vesting period) or sILV2 (usable immediately in-game).

Where are Illuvium NFTs traded?

Illuvials and in-game items are traded on Immutable X zkEVM, an Ethereum Layer-2 marketplace that provides lower transaction fees compared to Ethereum mainnet. They can also be listed on compatible external NFT marketplaces that support Immutable X.

What is the Illuvinati Council?

The Illuvinati Council is Illuvium's decentralized governance body. ILV holders can vote on game improvement proposals, changes to the token economy, and other decisions affecting the ecosystem. Council members are elected by the community.

How does ILV staking work?

ILV holders can stake their tokens in the Illuvium Vault. Stakers receive a portion of revenue generated by in-game purchases. The protocol uses these earnings to buy back ILV from the market and distribute it to stakers, creating a demand-side mechanism tied to game activity. Staking rewards vest over a period of time before they can be withdrawn as tradable ILV.

Closing Thoughts

Illuvium has moved from concept to live product since its initial announcement in 2021. With the open beta now available and three interconnected game titles in active development, it represents one of the more technically ambitious projects in the blockchain gaming space. The dual-token model, on-chain NFT ecosystem, and DAO governance structure are designed to align player incentives with long-term ecosystem growth. How the project develops as it moves toward a full release, and whether it can attract a sustainable player base beyond the Web3 audience, remain open questions.
